Why melody beats every other brand asset

Brands spend fortunes on what they look like and very little on what they sound like. Yet when someone hums a few notes and everyone in the room names the brand, that brand owns something no logo can give it.

Melody is the reason. Of all the things a brand can make, a melody is the most useful, for three reasons.

It is distinctive

A short, well-written melody is instantly recognisable and very hard to confuse with anything else. That is the first job of any brand asset.

It is ownable

A melody can be protected, registered and defended. A mood, a genre or a sound effect is much harder to call your own.

It is flexible

A melody survives any arrangement. It can be a full orchestra in a brand film, a solo guitar in a social post, a two-note chime in an app and a hum in a car. Change the instrument, the tempo and the style and it is still yours. That is what lets a single idea work across every touchpoint, owned and licensed alike.

That flexibility also has commercial value. A melodic identity is not a one-off cost. It can be arranged, adapted and reused for years, and the investment in it keeps paying back.

Start with the tune

The best sonic branding work starts with one big idea: a melody strong enough to carry a campaign and to sit at the heart of every sound the brand makes. In an ideal world, the campaign idea and the sonic branding idea are the same thing.

When a client asks where to start, the answer is almost always the same. Start with the tune.
